Unlike our other products, these modal shawls are not handcrafted in Nepal from cashmere or cashmere blend. Our modal "ranghi-tanghi" (multi-color) shawls are machine loomed and digitally printed in India. In recent years they have become extremely popular among the young women of Nepal, and we could not resist offering them to you, despite our preference for traditional Nepalese handicrafts. These pieces are sold by the same entrepreneurs who produce pashmina shawls, and form a growing part of Nepal's fashion scene and its consumer economy.

Modal is a semi-synthetic fabric, a type of rayon made by breaking down and reassembling the cellulose (cell-wall material) into a fiber that can be spun and woven like a natural fiber. It is not fully synthetic, a term usually applied to nylon, acrylic, and other fibers made from petro-chemicals. Modal is made by recycling beechwood, bamboo, or other readily available waste wood products.

Modal fabric does not have the insulating qualities of pashmina, but it is extremely soft, light, and comfortable to wear in warm weather. It accepts dyes quite readily. Digital prints do not completely saturate the fabric, so the backside of the shawl is not nearly as bright as the front. The shawls should be dry-cleaned or hand washed.
