Mt. Everest

The Sagarmatha, our flagship product, is named for the highest mountain in the world, also known as Mt. Everest and Jomo Lungma. Like the mountain, this shawl is universally recognized as the nec plus ultra in its field. The square weave represents the most ancient tradition in handloomed fabric, and the single-weight pure cashmere yarn has the best ratio of weight to insulation (warmth) of any natural fiber that we know of. The fullsize is also traditional among people who use these shawls: the generous dimensions are perfect for multiple draping styles, even for petite women.

Most of our current collection of Sagarmathas have tasseled fringes. There is no universal standard for these twisted and knotted strands; for the most part they are 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm). We also have a couple of shawl colors with ragged fringe (also called eyelash or natural). These are listed at the end of the palette section.

But is it a ring shawl??

"Ring shawl" is not a technical term, but is often used interchangeably with 100% pashmina ... or with shahtoosh, which is woven from the undercoat of the endangered Tibetan antelope, and is theoretically illegal everywhere. The idea is that the shawl could slide through a lady's ring. This is not a particularly trenchant criterion, given the variety of ring sizes, shawl sizes, and weave types. And yes, these shawls can slide through an average-size woman's ring.
