emerald Pumori shawl from Sunrise Pashmina (VIS #pf-105) Sunrise Pashmina (VIS #pf-105) Emerald medium-size pumori shawl

Diamond-weave jacquard can be seen on close inspection, but does not dominate the visual impression of the shawl when viewed from a conversational distance.

The shawls on this page are handloomed Fullsize Pumoris, approximately 36 by 80 inches or 91 by 203 cm. If you are looking a somewhat smaller version, 28 inches by 80 inches, or 71 by 203 cm, please visit our Medium-Size Pumori page.

Pumori is our name for what the Nepali producers refer to as "superlight" or "diamond weave." The yarn is much finer, and the fabric is quite tight-woven, which means a lot more work for the weaver. Despite the somewhat gauzy look (especially under flash lighting), the shawls are amazingly warm. They are light enough to be worn as a scarf without seeming bulky -- in fact, they are often worn two at a time.

The signature Pumori weave is a small repeating diamond pattern in Jacquard.

Namche on Pumori

Just to be clear, the name Pumori is not a traditional term for this weave: we made it up, because there is no standard terminology in use at this time. We named the weave after the most beautiful mountain in the Sherpa domain of the Himalayas. At 23,494 feet (7,161 meters), Pumori is not in the same rank as the tallest peaks of Nepal -- which is to say, of the world. But even as it stands directly juxtaposed with the greatest of the giants (including Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse), it is unequaled in elegance and originality of shape: a gigantic upended football, as brilliant as one of Elizabeth Taylor's famous baubles. Truly unforgettable... much like the Pumori shawl.

In the 1988 photo above, Seth's trekking companion, Namche (named for Namche Bazaar), undoubtedly the first Irish Wolfhound on Kala Patthar, the southeastern ridge of Pumori. (Don't bring yours... it was dumb to expect her to enjoy the trek.)

For more information about and close-up photographs of Pumori weave, see Fabric and Size.

Somewhat larger photographs of these shawls appear on our Photographs page.

Note that the colors in our photos do not always represent the colors realistically colors. The flash tends to lighten the colors -- and also makes the shawls appear more translucent than they would in natural light. The "thread colors" mentioned below are those used on Neelam Thread Chart that all Nepalese dyers refer to.
